El Salvador tourism makes steady progress

Tuesday 11 December, 2018

El Salvador received more than 1.8 million tourists this year, a 15 percent increase and representing income  of more than $1 billion, said Roberto Viera, deputy chief of Mintur, the Tourism ministry.

Viera was speaking to an audience of bank representatives who were negotiating credits. A decade ago, tourism accounted for only 2.4 percent of El Salvador's GDP. Now it amounts to double, he added.

The Mintur chief, José Napoleón Duarte, emphasized the importance of the Pueblos Vivos strategy to promote domestic tourism, which now generates some $270 million a year.
