Panama and China get round to talks on free trade accord

The first round of talks on a free trade accord between Panama and China began yesterday in Panama City and is scheduled to end Friday.

Wei Quiang, the Chinese ambassador, said that the accord could turn Panama into a springboard for Chinese companies throughout Latin America.

The next round of talks is to be held in Beijing. No fixed date has been set but it is expected to be in August.
