Pence scolds countries that have opted for China

Friday 05 October, 2018

US vice-president Mike Pence sharply criticized Central American countries -- Costa Rica, Panama and, more recently, El Salvador -- have broken relations with Taiwan in order to establish ties with Beijing.

"Although our government continues to respect the one-China policy, the United States will always believe that the democracy of Taiwan represents a better direction for the people of China," Pence said in a speech at the Hudson Institute.

Pence is due to meet on Thursday with the presidents of the countries of the Northern Triangle of Central America -- El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, in tongued efforts to solve the problems of violence and poverty that face the region.
