Spain´s Telefónica and Mexico´s América Móvil are opening cellular services in Costa Rica as 17-year monopoly ends

Thursday 10 November, 2011

Spain’s Telefónica opened its doors to the public this week and Mexico’s América Móvil plans to do so tomorrow, operating under the Movistar and Claro cellular brands respectively.

The commercial launch of the two networks marks the end of a 17 year of cellular monopoly by the state-owned ICE. For the first time in Costa Rica, consumers have a choice of operator and of a variety of plans never seen before in the country.

Movistar is offering a range of post and prepaid plans, with an additional data plan available for offering download speeds of up to 1 megabyte per second.
