Third time’s a charm in Mexico: López Obrador wins by landslide

Monday 02 July, 2018

In what was his third attempt to win the Mexican presidency, Andrés Manuel López Obrador won by the biggest majority of any winning candidate in the democratic era that began at the beginning of this century. He will also be the first leftwing democratically elected president of the nation.

President Enrique Peña Nieto congratulated López Obrador and assured him that he will have the support of the current government in order to ensure an orderly transition of power.

López Obrador’s victory has had an almost seismic impact in Mexican politics. The PRI, which ruled Mexico with near-absolute power for most of last century, is now one of several minority parties in the new Congress, according to the most recent results.
