4G network in Colombia

Monday, May 13, 2013

National 4G coverage in Colombia will create opportunities for companies and individuals, who provide mobile operators with a variety of services, ranging from subscriber management and billing programs, to local apps.

Six operators last week participated in an auction, for the right to provide 4G service, which is supposed to start before the end of this year.

Claro, Movistar, Avantel, DirecTV, Tigo (as part of a consortium with ETB) y Azteca Telecomunicaciones, all made offers, which will be evaluated by July 28.

Colombia expects to earn $250 million in license fees from winning companies.

With 4G service, users of smartphones, laptops and tablets can quickly download big files, including video, thanks to a transmission speed of up to 1 gigabit (1 billion bits) of data per second.
