América Móvil and Telefónica in $1 billion battle for Guatemala

Guatemalans spent some $1.04 billion on cellular phones last year, according to consultants Pyramid Research.
 
The number of cellular subscribers roser from 64,000 in 1997 to 17.7 million at the end of this June (122 phones per 100 inhabitants), thanks to competition by operators such as América Móvil (Claro) of Mexico and Spain’s Telefónica which joined the market opening in 1998.
 
Guatemala’s total telecommunications market came to $2.1 billion last year, compared with El Salvador with $1.4 billion, Honduras $658 million, Nicaragua $487 million and Costa Rica $905 million.
