Banana importers report lower shipments after bad weather in Guatemala

Friday, June 25, 2010

Some banana importers have reported lower shipments related to bad weather in Guatemala and other parts of Central America, but as of June 22, quality and retail prices hadn’t been affected.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, however, reported higher retail prices than last year and than in preceding weeks this year.

In late May, Guatemala was hit with two major events. On May 28, The Pacaya Volcano erupted. Tropical Storm Agatha followed on May 29-30.

Honduras, another major banana producer, also was hit hard by Agatha.
