Belize quietly formalizes border with Guatemala

Monday, March 6, 2017

The Belize government is quietly establishing its presence at the Jalacte/Santa Cruz border crossing. Jalacte is a village on Belize’s side of the border and Santa Cruz is on the Guatemalan side.

Villagers have long been traversing the area freely, “exporting” agricultural products to Guatemala and importing consumer goods into Belize. Recently, though, Belize set up an “agricultural outreach station” with intent to support the export of agricultural goods, particularly cattle, into Guatemala.
