Big drop in coffee prices puts squeeze on growers

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

The price of coffee in the New York Stock Exchange continues to drop, going from $238 per quintal last December, to $187 l this month.

Guatemalan coffee growers are concerned, as they also have to deal with a drop in production levels and a price increase on fertilizers used in the land they harvest.

Growers will have to reassess their budgets, as coffee prices continue to drop while the costs of inputs remain the same, said Ricardo Villanueva, president of Guatemala's National Coffee Association.
