Billion-dollar earnings spur growth in tourism throughout Central America

Central America as a whole generates $8 billion a year from tourism, about 5 percent of total regional GDP.

But the industry accounts to 12 percent of GDP in Costa Rica and 20 percent in tiny Belize.

However, efforts are being made to boost tourist arrivals throughout Central America. Panama is betting on golf to attract them, and Honduras is the leading destination for cruise ships.
