Canada's Excellon halts mining operations in Mexico

Canada's Excellon Resources Inc said mining operations at its La Platosa silver mine in Durango, Mexico were halted following an "illegal action" by landowners and union members at the site on Monday.

Excellon, which held a vote for selection of a representative union at the mine on July 5, said allegations made by the union and other groups that employees were intimidated during the voting process were false.

The company, which operates in Mexico and Canada, said in a statement that it has filed criminal charges and commenced lawsuits for damages against all members and groups participating in the action.
