Cellphone boom delights consumers in Costa Rica

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

In only the first month of an open market in mobile telephony, Costa Rican consumers have been bombarded by new options in services and facilities.

The most obvious impact has been the opening of 20 exclusive stores by América Móvil's Claro and Telefónica's Movistar. Only a year ago, there were only four such stores, and they were for Kölbi, the brand of the state Monopoly, the ICE.

But the big stores reflect only part of the change. Consumers can top up their pre-paid balances in 50,000 corner stores throughout the country.
