Cemex wins $10 million suit against Costa Rican municipality. Dispute ended after 10-year battle in the courts
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Cemex Costa Rica, the local unit of the Mexican cement company, has been cleared by a court after a 10-year legal battle in which the municipality of Abangares in Costa Rica claimed that Cemex owed it $10 million.
The court ruled that Cemex was not obliged to pay the municipality taxes for mineralized rocks that it used for industrial production.
But this is only the first legal case to be resolved between Cemex and Abangares. Another is due to be decided on the issue of the cement company’s 2001-2005 tax bill.
