Central America boosts electricity production

Electricity generation in Central America grew 3.3 percent last year, reaching 45,735 Gigawatts/hour, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Eclac.

Forty-seven percent of the region's energy came from hydraulic power, 36 percent from fossil fuels and 8 percent from wind.

Costa Rica leads the region in green energy, with 88 percent of its total production from renewable sources, followed by Guatemala with 68 percent, El Salvador with 60 percent, Nicaragua with 50 percent and Honduras with 41 percent.
