China could be poised to take on the US in Latin America

China and Panama continue to develop ties, with a number of projects in the pipeline and others already being implemented. In addition to obvious economic benefits, this trend is apparently driven by Beijing’s intention to expand its political and economic presence in the region.

Chinese companies already tried expanding their presence in the region several years ago, during the modernization of the Panama Canal. At the time, they faced fierce resistance from the United States. Now, they are fighting back.
