Chiquita launches Costa Rican plant to convert fruit pulp into energy and fertilizer

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Chiquita Brands International says a new “biodigester” system installed in Costa Rica will turn organic material from banana farming into sustainable energy for its plant and fertilizer for local farmers.

The technology is now in place at Chiquita’s Mundimar facility in Guápiles, Costa Rica.

The biodigester will convert fruit waste and processing water from banana operations into electrical and heat energy, and produce nutrient rich fertilizer material for local palm farmers.
