Clamor in Costa Rica over plan for mega-hydroelectric dam

Costa Rica’s Diquís hydroelectric project is still on the drawing board but it has already raised a clamor of protest by local communities and environmentalists.

Diquís has been hailed as the savior of the nation’s electricity problems. Its 650 megawatts will provide a third of Costa Rica’s generation capacity.

Estimates point to a 2013 launch for the pro,ject, and 2018 by completion. Demand for electricity is expected to double within a decade.
