Claro seeks removal of conditions imposed on Digicel deal in El Salvador. Regulator reviews possible market restrictions

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Mexico’s América Móvil has called on El Salvador’s competition regulator, Superintendencia de Competencia, to reconsider the conditions imposed on the acquisition of Digicel El Salvador by América Móvil’s local unit Claro.

The regulator is reported to have received the request from Claro on 9 September, and is now analysing whether or not to remove the conditions it placed on the deal earlier this month.

Last week the regulator ruled that the acquisition of Digicel by Claro would restrict competition in the mobile market, and therefore before it can be approved, Claro must return to the telecoms regulator to request spectrum reserved for new players.
