Coal workers strike at Glencore unit in Colombia

Friday, July 20, 2012

Colombian coal workers for the local unit of Glencore International went on strike Thursday, the latest in a string of protests and other problems to beset companies working in the country's coal- and oil-export industry.

The strike paralyzed output at all of Glencore's mines, including the main La Jagua mines, in the northern state of César.

Glencore's La Jagua and other mines accounted for about 15 percent of Colombia's total coal production last year of 87 million metric tons.
