Coffee rust deals a major blow to Guatemala's coffee exports for current harvest

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Guatemala's 2011-2012 coffee harvest is much worse than expected, and may end up to be 15 percent lower than last year's, according to the Guatemalan Coffee Exporters Group ADEC.

The decrease means Guatemala will likely export around 3.24 million 60 kilo bags of coffee this year.

The coffee rust fungus, known locally as roya, has wiped out up to half the anticipated production in some plantations and could result in lower productivity in the next two seasons.
