Coffee rust will cost Central America a million jobs

Almost one million jobs in the Central American coffee sector could be lost, due to the effects of the coffee rust fungus that has affected the region, according to Central American Business Intelligence, CABI, from Guatemala.

CABI estimates that some 972,000 direct and indirect jobs in the coffee industry could be affected, which is 20 percent of the sector's total in the region.

Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are the most affected, while Costa Rica and Honduras have been the only ones to announce million- ollar proposals to reduce the outbreak.
