Colombia minister rules out NATO membership

Colombia's defense minister on Tuesday backed away from a suggestion that the country might be looking at membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The comment, made by President Juan Manuel Santos, had caused alarm in some South American leaders.

The minister, Juan Carlos Pinzon, said the country merely plans to sign a deal with NATO for cooperation in human rights, military justice and the education of troops.
