Friday, May 27, 2016

With more than 3 million twenty-foot-equivalent containers a year, Panama´s Colón is the busiest port in Central America and second in Latin America, according to United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Spanish only).

Colón’s traffic grew 9% in 2015 compared to 2014, while Balboa – the other main Panamanian port - moved 5% fewer containers.

Honduras’ San Lorenzo is last in the isthmus, with 16.000 containers in 2015.

Santos is the Latin American leader, with 3,6 million, while Venezuela`s El Guamache is last with fewer than 13.000.

The ranking is based on information submitted by port and terminal operators and national port authorities (numbers in brackets indicate the position of each port in Latin America).
