Competition launched in Costa Rican cellphones

The telecommunications regulator, Sutel, handed out a million telephone numbers each to Telefónica and América Móvil, so launching the Costa Rican cellular market.
The handover marked the end of 50 years of state monopoly by Costa Rica’s state electricity company, ICE.
Carlos Slim’s América Móvil will use its Claro brand, while Telefónica will use Movistar. The two companies are fierce competitors in markets throughout Latin America.
