Consumers forced to tighten belts in Costa Rica

Monday, February 18, 2019

Within five months, consumers in Costa Rica will have to pay 13 percent more for goods that previously were free of valued-added tax. VAT will be imposed on house rentals, personal and leisure services, among others.

The increase will be substantial on top of the sales tax.

VAT and an adjustment in public services are essential to keep the government's finances alive.
