Corpus Christi could be San Antonio’s Texan link to a widened Panama Canal

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

San Antonio may be thanking its lucky stars for Corpus Christi if it gets funding to prepare for the widening of the Panama Canal in 2014.

Texas is well positioned to take advantage of the canal expansion, says Juan Sosa, president of the U.S.-Panama Business Council and a former Panamanian ambassador to the United States.

The No. 1 destination of cargo ships crossing the canal is the Port of Houston. Houston already is investing about $1 billion to prepare physically for the larger container ships that will cross at Panama and turn north to the United States.
