Costa Rica and Nicaragua interconnect as part of regional electricity system

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Costa Rica and Nicaragua have made progress in energy interconnection. Electricity substations at Cañas in Guanacaste, Costa Rica and Ticuantepe, Nicaragua, managed to interconnect for the first time for a duration of three hours last week.

The link project is part of electrical interconnection system for Central American countries. The aim is to create a regional electricity market from Guatemala to Panama to allow savings of up to 20 percent in the average cost of power generation.
