Costa Rica beats Philippines in 'mango war'

Monday, July 2, 2012

The Philippines has halted mango exports to the United States because prices of the fruit from Costa Rica are much lower.

“Our mango exporters stopped their shipment to the US for the simple reason that it is not competitive as compared to the South American mango, particularly Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico,” said Clarito Barrón, director of the Bureau of Plant Industry.

Barrón said also that bananas from South and Central America would cost $0.99 per kilo, while bananas from the Philippines would cost $4 per kilo.
