Costa Rica clears the way for cellphone competition

Obstacles that confronted the plans to open the market in cellphones in Costa Rica have been overcome.

The state-owned monopoly, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute decided to withdraw a bid to sue the telecommunications regulator.

The regulator, in return, promised to ensure a mechanism that would maintain the institute’s finances afloat, as well as promoting its fixed-phone network.
