Costa Rica concerned about Nicaraguan canal

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Costa Rica's foreign minister Enrique Castillo says his country worries about neighboring Nicaragua building a canal because it would affect rivers along their shared border.

Castillo says that even if the canal is built along Lake Nicaragua, it would affect the riverbeds at the San Juan River, which runs along their border, and the San Carlos River in northern Costa Rica.

However, he said that Costa Rica will wait for Nicaragua to define the canal's route before raising its concerns with the Nicaraguan government.
