Costa Rica government spending doubled in decade by bloated bureaucracy

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Costa Rica's budget has snowballed. Over the last decade, government expenditure has doubled.

In 2000, the state budget amounted to 29 percent of the economy.

Twelve years later the government's plans amount to almost the same proportion of the gross domestic product, but spending has doubled in real terms, the government's wage bill has doubled and the fiscal deficit now comes to 6 percent.
