Costa Rica has a record-breaking year for tourism in 2011, with 2.2 million visitors

Costa Rica closed out a record-breaking year for tourism with a strong December, when hotel occupation in the country rose by 6.1 percent compared with December 2010.

The country took in 2.2 million tourists during 2011, the highest number it has ever received.

The newly opened terminal at the International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste province, helped bring the airport a 31.4 percent increase in arrivals compared with the previous year.
