Costa Rica has a strong appetite for phones

Costa Rica's cellular phone market has grown 47 percent since the country opened the sector to foreign investment two years ago, Costa Rican daily La República reported.

In 2012, the country's cellular penetration rate was 69 percent, compared to this year's 116 percent, a figure which shows many Costa Ricans buy more than one phone.

The number is higher than countries such as the United States, Mexico and Colombia, where the rate is closer to 100 percent.
