Costa Rica has more cell phones than people thanks to the end of state monopoly

Monday, February 6, 2012

Costa Rica reached just over 100 percent penetration in mobile telephony thanks to the end of the state monopoly and the arrival of private operators, the government reported.

The country has slightly more than 4.3 million inhabitants and 4.4 million mobile lines have been activated.

The market opening in telephony generated 24.8 percent of the foreign direct investment in Costa Rica last year, said Laura Chinchilla, the president.
