Costa Rica lags in development

Costa Rica has failed to reach its development potential that its economic model, implemented 20 years ago, had promised, Costa Rican daily La República reported.

Although the country has made environmental, social, economic and political progress, it is not enough, said Jorge Vargas, director of the Estado de la Nación Program, a research project about sustainable human development.

Costa Rica is currently 20 percent more expensive than the Latin American average, while its fiscal deficit is a threat to its macroeconomic stability.
