Costa Rica leads in English proficiency

In 35th position globally – up three spots from last year - Costa Rica is first in Central America in English proficiency, according to Education First 2017.

In Latin America only Argentina, in 25th place worldwide, outperforms Costa Rica.

Panama, in 49th place, is second in the Isthmus, while El Salvador in 69th position is last among four Central American countries evaluated in the ranking, which does not include Honduras or Nicaragua.

Globally, Netherlands has the highest English proficiency, while Laos is last.

The index includes 80 countries whose native language is not English (numbers in brackets indicate the global position of each country).
