Tuesday, September 20, 2011

WHAT? Former presidential candidate, Ottón Solís, told the government that his party will support proposed tax reform.

WHY? Solís can ensure that the reform makes Costa Ricans pay tax on income earned anywhere in the world. For its part, the government would have various new taxes, which reduce the public-sector deficit.

WHAT'S NEXT? Many parts of the reform proposal are sensible. But efforts to impose a complicated global tax could be a major headache for residents, while discouraging foreign investment.
