Costa Rica plans more energy sector competition

Good competition between Costa Rica's private and public sectors would be the only way to lower the country's electricity costs, already among the region's most expensive, Costa Rican daily La República reported.

A raise in energy fees authorized by the government will make Costa Rica the region's second most expensive country for industrial users of electricity.

The government has proposed increase private firms' participation in the sector from 15 to 30 percent, as well as increase use of renewable sources.
