Medical tourism is a rapidly growing sector in Costa Rica, with some 36,000 people coming to country each year in search of an aesthetic touch-up or treatment for an illness or disease.\

The sector generates some $288 million in revenue annually, representing 1.23 percent of gross domestic product.\
\
Cristian Rivera, a plastic surgeon and adviser Costa Rican Tourism Institute, said that most of the foreign patients are women over 50 seeking dental services.\
