Costa Rica trade artery to be widened

The Costa Rica government aims to broaden to four lanes the Route 32 highway from the capital, San José, to the Caribbean coast. not just the 107 kilometers stretch that is already underway.

Broadening the route for all of its 180 kilometers length is of vital importance in view of the launch of operations is being planned in February for the new Moín Container Terminal that is to handle 80 percent of the nation's exports from the Caribbean coast.

However, broadening the highway will not be easy. Ecologists might voice opposition because the route surrounds a national park. Also, the government would face a challenge on its hands over compulsory purchases of properties along the route that have already been proved to be tortuous,
