Costa Rican court backs moratorium on oil exploration

Thursday, March 7, 2013

The judges of Costa Rica's Constitutional Court rejected an appeal brought by the Association of Geologists of Costa Rica against the moratorium on oil exploration in the country.

In 2011, the Costa Rican government enacted a three-year moratorium on oil exploration in the country, thus suspending the concessions that were previously granted for the activity, such as that held by the US firm, Mallon Oil Company.

The moratorium will continue until the end of the three-year term set out by the initial decree.
