Costa Rican government sets August deadline for first licenses for cellphone operators

Thursday, July 15, 2010

The Costa Rican government has its eyes on August as a goal to get closer to awarding the first licenses to cellular telephone operators that will compete with the state operator, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute.

Marco Vargas, ministro de la Presidencia, said that the government recognizes that the opening of the market has been extremely slow.

The opening of the cellular telephone market in Costa Rica began back in 2008 when the Telecommunications Law was passed. However, it has been a slow process.
