Costa Rican hydroelectric project faces severe challenge by indigenous activists

Friday, February 25, 2011

The Diquís hydroelectric project in Costa Rica faces a major challenge that threatens Costa Rica’s energy plans for the future.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute, ICE, bought 800 hectares for the location of the plant on the Térraba reserve in Puntarenas, though the law stipulated that the land was part of an indian reserve.

Now the indigenous people are reclaiming their land.
