Court sets deadline for Costa Rican cellphone auction

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

After long delays, cellphone users in Costa Rica will soon be able to choose the option of using alternatives to the state-owned Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) as service provider.

The new companies that are bidding to rival the ICE will be known by November at latest. The deadline was set by the nation’s Constitutional Court in a ruling on delays in the process.

The regulator, Sutel, will now be obliged to speed up the publication of its tender for the three frequencies that up to five multinationals are interested in acquiring.
