Crisis in Nicaragua sparks slump in Costa Rica trade
Friday, August 3, 2018
No end is in sight to the crisis in Nicaragua, which continues to cause severe concern for Costa Rica's exporters and migratory authorities.
Industries such as those of cement, pineapples, gourmet bakeries and electrical supplies are among those most affected. Across the board, Costa Rica's trade with Nicaragua has been halved since the crisis began three months ago.
The other aspect to the problem is the logistical chain that connects the countries to the north, where costs have surged. Business leaders want that to be resolved by a ferry that could link Costa Rica. So far, however, that option remains unclear.
