El Salvador mulls action on Goldcorp Guatemala plan
The government of El Salvador has created a committee to monitor the possible entry of pollution into the river Lempa and lake Güija from a gold mine on the Guatemalan side of its border, President Mauricio Funes announced.
The mine is being developed by Canada's Goldcorp and is in the Jutiapa region of Guatemala, very close to the border of El Salvador.
"The government of El Salvador will do its best to protect its rivers and lakes, as they provide most of the drinking water for Salvadorans", Funes added.
