El Salvador's coffee exports slump by 37 percent

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Coffee exports from El Salvador fell to 49,166 60-kilogram bags, or a 37 percent decline, in August compared with the same month last year, the national coffee council, CSC, said.

Total shipments through the first 11 months of the current 2011-2012 harvesting season were down 39.6 percent compared with the same period during the previous 2010-2011 season, hitting 1,013,787 60-kg bags.

"The fall in exports is due to low harvest in 2011-2012, the result of a biannual downturn and strong rains in October 2011," the council said in a statement.
