Enel signs hydro pact with Guatemalan town
Guatemala's San Juan Cotzal municipality and Italy's Enel Green Power have signed an agreement to guarantee the operation of a controversial hydropower plant, Guatemala's government said.
Enel has faced opposition from local indigenous communities because of the Palo Viejo plant of 84 megawatts operating since 2012.
The agreement with San Juan Cotzal includes the distribution of nearly $294,000 a year to local authorities for programs and social-economic development, including water treatment, education and environmental projects.
