English language Tico Times newspaper ceases print
Monday, October 1, 2012
A respected English-language newspaper in Costa Rica has laid off its entire 16-member staff and ended its print edition, citing its inability to withstand a long-term drop in advertising revenues.
Tico Times editor David Boddiger says the paper's former staff members are working on a volunteer basis to keep the newspaper running exclusively as a website.
He says the Times was badly hurt when real-estate advertising aimed at US expatriates dropped off sharply in the wake of the global financial crisis.
